Responsive Management

Our latest, um, reader has noted that the below picture is a much better picture in his opinion than the one his mother chose to show of him on the boat ride in Amsterdam. And that his grandmother would rather see this one.

We have adjusted our entries accordingly. Never let it be said that we are less than responsive here at dothedozens. We even play requests.

Hi, dad,

To "do the dozens" is to play a sort of game in which two people stand up facing each other and insult each other as lyrically as possible without actually calling each other names (which is poor form). Winner is determined by crowd reaction, as it's always a public game.

It is as far as I know played purely by southern, mostly small town, nearly always Black, folks. It is often said to be (by people who care) the original source of rap music.

Oddly, there was a TV show here a couple years ago which followed exactly this format: two people stood on either end of a stage and insulted each other to much applause and so on. Though in that case the people were Dutch of course. I expect some TV producer encountered it the same place I did -- reading.

I am enjoying your blog very much. And now I have learned something I didn't know anything about--'dothedozens'.

Jeannine, I don't want to be considered an interferring grandmother, and this is just my thoughts on it, but is it possible to let Douwe's hair grow a little longer. As you know, I loved his hair the way he wore it here and while I know he might have needed it cut into more of boy's cut, it is extremely short.

Love to you and yours..Mom

Dear interfering grandmother,

I posted this earlier but it isn't showing up do here it is again.

I prefer his hair long, too. But longer hair requires maintenance, and until he quits having a cow every time he gets his hair cut, well, shorter is better. I may have it shaved next time, bhah ha ha.

I found it a bit short this time myself. But it does make his eyes look bigger. And prevents him from hiding behind his bangs when he is avoiding a subject (wonder where he got that?).
